SUBJECT: Killeen Arts Commission Grant Recommendations

BACKGROUND AND FINDINGS:

One of the primary responsibilities of the Arts Commission is to make recommendations to the City Council regarding the allocation of Hotel Occupancy Tax funds that are designated for grants to the arts.

The Killeen Arts Commission held a meeting on June 1, 2018. During this meeting, nine (9) applicants presented their grant applications to the Arts Commission regarding grant requests. At the July 13, 2018, meeting, the Arts Commission recommended grant awards for all nine (9) applicants and administrative costs for the Arts Commission, totaling $187,167.

Upon Council’s approval of the recommended grant awards, contracts with the grant recipients will be prepared and executed with an effective date of October 1, 2018. The recommended allocations are as follows:

15,000 Songhai Bamboo Roots
2,000 Killeen Arts Commission
$187,167 Total

THE ALTERNATIVES CONSIDERED:

1. Awarding the $187,167 budget allocation to grantees as recommended
2. Not awarding the funds to grantees

Which alternative is recommended? Why?

Alternative 1 is preferred, awarding the full allocation amount to grantees so that the Commission can continue to promote the arts within the City of Killeen.
